Bomber kills four American troops in Afghan north

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives on Wednesday in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province, killing at least 10 people including four U.S. troops who had strayed from their base to take photographs in a park, Afghan police said.

Slain soldiers lay on a blood-soaked pavement beside a blown-off leg and strewn helmets. Afghan police rushed to try and move the soldiers into vehicles.

The American soldiers were taking tourist photographs in a nearby park in Maymana, the capital of the relatively peaceful Faryab province, when they were targeted, provincial police chief General Abdul Khaliq Aqsai told Reuters.

Four civilians and two Afghan policemen were also killed in the attack, which came ahead of the traditional summer fighting months and wounded at least five more Afghans, Aqsai added.

"We warned them (Americans) not to roam around the city," Aqsai said, adding that witnesses said the bomber walked right up to them and screamed "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) before detonating his suicide vest.

Neil Armstrong rallies Afghan troops

Neil Armstrong, the first man to land on the moon, jetted into Afghanistan this week with two other lunar greats to give a much-needed morale boost to the country's struggling air force. The 81-year-old American, who became a global sensation in 1969 when he became the first man to set foot on the lunar landscape, met Afghan officers in training at Camp Eggers in Kabul, the headquarters of the NATO-led training mission in Afghanistan. "Passion is important in every occupation," the bespectacled Armstrong was quoted by a NATO statement as telling a small group of Afghan Air Force trainees, who were shown in coalition pictures wearing camouflage. "It's encouraging to see this young group's enthusiasm and excitement," Armstrong told the small, eager crowd, with women clad in black hijabs and men wearing green berets. Winning the support of new recruits and ordinary Afghans alike is becoming increasingly difficult in the face of a resurgent Taliban and a costly war that has dragged on for 10 years. Celebrities often greet U.S. servicemen abroad, but such meetings with Afghans are rare. Armstrong was joined by 83-year-old Jim Lovell, who famously commanded and rescued the botched Apollo 13 mission in 1970, and Gene Cernan, 77, who was the last man to set foot on the moon. For Afghan trainee Lieutenant Khan Agha Ghaznavi, meeting "these great men who have actually been to the moon and could answer my questions directly... it's overwhelming". NATO is racing against the clock to train Afghanistan's poorly-equipped and largely illiterate police and army before handing over all security responsibilities to the Afghans by the end of 2014, a process which began in several areas last month.

British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been shot dead in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier from the Queen's Gurkha Engineers was serving with 21 Engineer Regiment. His family have been told.

He was killed on Friday by small arms fire in Nad Ali, Helmand province, the MoD said. The soldier has not yet been named.

The number of UK personnel killed in operations in Afghanistan since 2001 now stands at 331.

Lt Col David Southall, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said the soldier had been "selfless to the end".

He added: "He gave his life whilst supporting others. His sacrifice will not be forgotten."

His death in Afghanistan comes after two other soldiers died following separate incidents.

Afghanistan to review security plan for Kabul

KABUL (Reuters) - The Afghan government is to review its plan for securing Kabul a day after militants launched a series of commando-style attacks in the heart of the capital, the president's palace said on Tuesday.

Taliban gunmen launched a brazen assault on Monday in the center of the capital, with suicide bombers blowing themselves up at several locations and militants battling security forces from inside a shopping center engulfed in flames.

It was the most high-profile attack inside the capital for almost a year and came as President Hamid Karzai was swearing in cabinet members at his palace only a few hundred meters away.
